About Us
Welcome to The Reading Room Refectory – a new chapter in a building steeped in history. Originally built in 1835 by the renowned architect William Kendall, The Reading Room has long been a beloved landmark for the community. With its stunning sea views, it once served as a tranquil retreat for residents of Lewes Crescent, offering a serene space to read and reflect.
Today, the Reading Room combines its rich heritage with a fresh purpose. The beautifully restored space is designed to honour the past while embracing the present, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Under the ownership of Karl, the refectory brings people together to enjoy great coffee, cake, and conversation in a setting that celebrates its historic roots.
“Our vision is to create a community hub that respects the history of the Reading Room while providing a cosy, inviting space for locals to connect,” says Karl.
With a daily-changing menu crafted by Tina and Karen, the refectory offers thoughtful, comforting dishes. From heavenly bakes to hearty lunches, the evolving menu promises something special for every visit.
The Reading Room is more than just a place to eat and drink – it’s a space to gather, create, and inspire. Local artists and creatives are invited to showcase their work, making this a vibrant hub for the community. Whether you're catching up with friends over a glass of wine, enjoying a coffee with a book, or hosting a gathering, the Reading Room is your perfect retreat.
